Rabat – Morocco and France will renew their World Cup rivalry in arguably the most anticipated quarter-final matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The spotlight has shifted beyond tactics and team selection as both teams chase a place in the semi-finals, with officiating expected to be one of the biggest talking points before kickoff.

The fixture revives memories of the 2022 World Cup semi-final in Qatar, where France defeated Morocco 2-0. However, the result was overshadowed by two controversial penalty appeals that many football analysts, former players, and Moroccan supporters believe should have gone in favor of the Atlas Lions.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation submitted an official complaint to FIFA after that match, arguing that key refereeing decisions affected the outcome. The most debated incident came in the 27th minute when Sofiane Boufal fell inside the French penalty area following a challenge from Theo Hernandez. Instead of pointing to the spot, referee Cesar Ramos awarded France a free-kick and booked Boufal for simulation. Yet VAR did not intervene to correct the obviously wrong decision.

Another controversial moment followed before halftime when Morocco appealed for a penalty after Aurélien Tchouaméni appeared to impede Selim Amallah inside the box. Again, play continued despite strong protests from the Moroccan players.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand publicly stated that Morocco should have been awarded a penalty, while former Egyptian international referee Gamal El Ghandour later argued during his analysis for beIN SPORTS that both incidents deserved penalty kicks.

Officiating under the spotlight once again

The debate over refereeing has intensified during the 2026 World Cup after several knockout-stage matches sparked criticism over controversial decisions and inconsistent VAR interventions. As a result, many observers believe FIFA’s match officials will face increased scrutiny throughout the remainder of the tournament.

The debate has been fueled by France’s Round of 16 victory over Paraguay, where Kylian Mbappé scored the only goal from the penalty spot after a decision that sparked widespread discussion among supporters and media. While the spot-kick ultimately proved decisive, many questioned the referee’s interpretation of the incident, adding to a growing list of officiating controversies that have surrounded this edition of the World Cup.

For Morocco, the concern is not only about repeating history but also about ensuring that such a decisive match is determined by football rather than refereeing decisions. The controversy surrounding the current edition has only heightened expectations for a flawless officiating performance.

Despite the renewed discussion, Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has insisted that his players will not let revenge drive them. Instead, the Atlas Lions are fully focused on earning another historic qualification to the World Cup semi-finals.

Teams arrive full of confidence

Morocco enters the quarter-finals in excellent form after producing one of its most convincing performances of the tournament, defeating Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16. The Atlas Lions have combined defensive discipline with attacking efficiency throughout the competition and continue to demonstrate the resilience that carried them to the semi-finals four years ago.

France also arrives with momentum after overcoming Paraguay 1-0 to secure its place in the last eight. Didier Deschamps’ side once again possesses one of the tournament’s deepest squads and remains among the favorites to lift the trophy.

Match prediction

The encounter is expected to be a tactical battle. Morocco will rely on its compact defensive organization, quick transitions, and growing confidence under Ouahbi, while France will seek to control possession and exploit the individual quality of its attacking players.

Beyond the football itself, every refereeing decision is likely to receive intense attention given the history between the two nations and the officiating controversies that have marked this World Cup.

Prediction: Morocco 2-1 France.

If Morocco reproduces the discipline, intensity, and clinical finishing displayed against Canada, the Atlas Lions have every chance of reaching a second consecutive World Cup semi-final. However, with emotions still lingering from Qatar 2022 and officiating under unprecedented scrutiny, the referee may once again become one of the most closely watched figures on the pitch.
