Agadir – Morocco and Chile reaffirmed their commitment to deepening parliamentary cooperation during meetings held today in Rabat, with a visiting Chilean parliamentary delegation expressing support for the country’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara.
Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, met with a Chilean delegation from the Morocco-Chile Parliamentary Friendship Group, led by its president, Maria Catalina del Real Mihovilovic.
According to Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Del Real voiced support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, saying it would contribute to “strengthening serenity and progress in the Moroccan Sahara.”
Earlier in the day, the Chilean delegation also held talks with the Vice-President of Morocco’s House of Councillors, Lahcen Haddad, focusing on ways to expand parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
During the meeting, Haddad said Moroccan-Chilean relations have steadily advanced since the 2004 visit of King Mohammed VI to Chile, describing it as a milestone that helped establish a strategic partnership between the two nations.
He pointed to growing legislative cooperation through parliamentary exchanges, the implementation of a memorandum of understanding between Morocco’s House of Councillors and the Chilean Senate, and the work of bilateral friendship groups.
Haddad also emphasized the strategic importance of Morocco’s engagement with Latin America and the Pacific, citing the country’s observer status in the Pacific Alliance and the Atlantic initiatives launched by King Mohammed VI to strengthen cooperation between Africa and Latin America.
He identified several sectors with strong potential for bilateral collaboration, including sustainable agriculture, agri-food industries, water resource management, renewable energy, the blue economy, logistics, and the digital economy.
For her part, Del Real reaffirmed the Chilean Parliament’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and friendship with Morocco’s House of Councillors.
She praised the country’s development projects and institutional reforms under King Mohammed VI’s leadership and said the delegation seeks to expand parliamentary exchanges, share legislative expertise, and strengthen coordination on issues of common interest.
