Rabat – History repeats itself with Morocco having once again become Africa’s only survivor at the FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive tournament, after Egypt’s 3-2 defeat to Argentina.
With a quarterfinal clash against France on the wait, Morocco now has the opportunity to extend the Arab and African World Cup journey while adding another chapter to the country’s growing football legacy.
In the knockout stage clashes, it appeared Africa could have multiple representatives in the Round of 16 or even the quarterfinals.
Egypt was dominating and scored 2 goals, only for the Argentina team to break the curse and score 3 goals in the second half, allowing them to qualify to the quarterfinals.
Senegal’s story was no different; they scored two goals, but the Belgium team fought back and scored three goals in the last 5mins of the match, moving to extra time where Youri Tielemans managed to score his second goal at the very last minute, allowing Belgium to qualify to the Round of 16, and the Senegalese players went back home.
Cape Verde also pushed Argentina until their last breath before seeing their remarkable World Cup journey come to an end in a dramatic scenario.
Algeria’s campaign ended against Switzerland, while DR Congo suffered a narrow defeat to England.
With every other African team eliminated, Arab and African attention once again shifts to Morocco.
As they prepare to face France, Morocco now carries not only its own ambitions but also the hopes of a continent eager to win the title.
Will the Atlas Lions set another standard and qualify for the semi-final at the expense of France’s strong striker line?
