Rabat – France defeated Morocco 2-0 in a decisive quarterfinal match, ending the Atlas Lions’ thrilling World Cup campaign.
Morocco started with a bit of pressure but continued to resist France’s attacks, including their quick passing and transitions.
Iconic goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved a powerful penalty from Kylian Mbappé in the 26th minute of the decisive quarterfinal.
Mbappé won the penalty after a challenge from Noussair Mazraoui, who attempted to stop the French forward during a counterattack.
Mbappé’s penalty, however, was brilliantly saved by Morocco’s superstar Bounou, who faced the French star with full confidence.
Mbappé scored in the 60th minute of the match, with Dembélé doubling France’s lead just six minutes later.
Highlights of the game
France worked to break the Atlas Lions’ defense, but to no avail in the opening minutes of the match.
The pressure in the first half was evident to all viewers, with, of course, very important control from the Moroccan side, and excellent teamwork from Brahim Diaz, Hakimi, Mazraoui, Neil El Aynaoui, and the rest of the squad to neutralize France’s threats.
Many observers, however, highlighted how the referee denied Diaz a very legitimate foul between the 12th and 13th minutes.
Bilal El Khannouss made great interventions against Mbappé, continuing the spectacular performances that fans have become accustomed to throughout the 2026 World Cup.
Despite France’s threats, the Atlas Lions showed greater determination, resilience, and defensive discipline throughout the match.
Morocco produced a spectacular second half, doing more to break down France’s attacks while enjoying greater control as they searched for a way to reach France’s net.
Bounou continued to shine throughout the match, making crucial saves to keep Morocco in the game during some of France’s most dangerous counterattacks.
However, France managed to find the net twice through Mbappé and Dembélé and created several other dangerous chances that were either denied by Bounou or stopped by the Atlas Lions’ defense. Morocco also created a few opportunities but lacked the cutting edge needed to trouble France, the runners-up at the 2022 World Cup.
The Atlas Lions’ journey has been impressive, with no one seeing their presence at such an advanced stage as a coincidence.
The Atlas Lions showed persistence. Although several players made their World Cup debuts on the pitch, they demonstrated progress, continuity, experience, and resilience from the start until this stage of the tournament.
They not only played football but also entertained audiences beyond Moroccan fans, both on the pitch and across Morocco and the world.
They showed that the impossible is not Moroccan.
And today, despite not securing a place in the semi-finals, they showed they can compete at the highest level, always ready, always at the rendezvous to create and innovate. And they will remain the only Arab and African team to reach this stage of the tournament.
