Meknes – Following Morocco’s 2026 FIFA World Cup elimination against France, goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi highly commended his teammate Yassine Bounou. Mohamedi called the Atlas Lions’ star the greatest goalkeeper in the history of Africa and the Arab world.
In media remarks, the Moroccan keeper stressed that Bounou’s brilliance is nothing new, pointing out his long-standing consistency for the national team.
“Bounou is always there for us, whether in this World Cup or throughout his career with the national team. He is amazing. For me, he is the best goalkeeper in the history of Africa and the Arab world,” Mohamedi said.
Mohamedi added that Bounou’s heroics are exactly what the team expects from him, expressing immense gratitude for his impact on and off the pitch.
“What he did today was no surprise to me. He always tries to help us with his exceptional performances. We are very happy to have him in our national team, and we can only thank him for everything he gives to our country and our team, both as a person and as a goalkeeper,” he added.
The statements came after Bounou delivered another standout performance, including saving a powerful penalty from Kylian Mbappé in the 26th minute of the decisive quarterfinal.
With this performance, Bounou made World Cup history by becoming the first goalkeeper ever to save four penalties in a single tournament.
The Atlas Lions’ remarkable 2026 World Cup campaign came to a close on Thursday following a 2-0 quarterfinal loss to France, bringing a memorable tournament run to an end.
