Rabat – Manchester United have launched an ambitious effort to reshape their midfield, pursuing multiple transfer deals as part of a broader squad rebuild ahead of the new Premier League season.
The club’s approach signals a more decisive transfer strategy under head coach Michael Carrick, with several high-profile targets identified.
One deal done
United have already secured one signing, with Brazilian midfielder Ederson completing his move from Atalanta. The player underwent a medical in New York after agreeing to a fee just under £40 million.
He is expected to join the squad following the conclusion of his World Cup duties with Brazil.
A major setback
United’s pursuit of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has ended in disappointment. Club leadership, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, refused to exceed their valuation, a stance that also saw them miss out on other targets such as Elliot Anderson.
Fernandes has since agreed to join Tottenham, marking a significant missed opportunity for United.
Baleba pursuit cool, new names emerge
Brighton’s Carlos Baleba had long been viewed as a priority target, with reports suggesting personal terms were agreed months ago. However, United have now stepped back from negotiations, with Brighton maintaining a valuation of around £70 million despite lowering their initial £100 million demand.
Attention has shifted toward more affordable options. According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, valued at around £50 million, and Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams have emerged as leading alternatives.
Multiple outlets, including The Athletic, Sky Sports, and BBC Sport, report that United and Chelsea have reached a full agreement for Santos. The Brazilian is expected to undergo a medical soon to finalize the move.
Other targets remain in view
Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott remain on United’s radar. Scott, in particular, has gained momentum after a standout season and his first England call-up under Thomas Tuchel.
However, United face strong competition, with Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Chelsea all monitoring the young midfielder.
A defining summer
United’s midfield rebuild carries significant weight. A club committed to a new era under Carrick cannot afford to treat missed deals as minor setbacks.
With Champions League football returning, getting recruitment decisions right will prove crucial to the team’s ambitions.
