Rabat – Ajax have opened talks to sign Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi from Girona, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Romano reports that Ounahi has become Ajax’s top target in the summer transfer window. Negotiations are already in progress as the Dutch club looks to strengthen its midfield.
The 25-year-old has a release clause worth €25 million in his contract with Girona. However, Ajax hopes to complete the deal for a slightly lower fee. Discussions between all parties are expected to continue in the coming days.
One of the main reasons behind Ajax’s interest is new head coach Michel. The Spanish manager worked with Ounahi at Girona and has identified the Moroccan international as one of his priority signings.
Outstanding World Cup campaign
Ounahi was one of Morocco’s standout players at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He played a key role in helping the Atlas Lions reach the quarter-finals for the second consecutive World Cup, another historic achievement for Moroccan football.
During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Azzedine Ounahi appeared in 6 matches for the Morocco national football team, recording 2 goals and creating 5 scoring chances across 439 minutes of action. He served as a key creative engine in the midfield as Morocco advanced to the quarter-finals before being eliminated in a 2-0 loss to France on July 9, 2026.
The Moroccan Bee has impressed with his calmness on the ball, accurate passing, and ability to control the tempo of matches. He was one of Morocco’s most consistent performers throughout the tournament and played an important role in victories over the Netherlands and Canada.
His performances earned praise from fans and football experts, further increasing his reputation on the international stage. The World Cup once again showed why Ounahi is regarded as one of Morocco’s most talented midfielders.
If the transfer is completed, Ounahi would add experience, creativity, and composure to Ajax’s midfield as the Dutch giants prepare for the new season. For now, talks remain ongoing, and no final agreement has been reached.
