Rabat – There were times during this World Cup when France looked like a champion in waiting. Confident under pressure, clinical when opportunities presented themselves, and full of players who knew exactly what was required of them.
But every champion team inevitably comes up against one that exposes their frailties.Â
For France, that team might be Spain.
It isn’t just because they have managed to qualify for the semi-finals; the manner in which they got there is the reason why they might present such an intimidating challenge.Â
De la Fuente’s men have progressed match-by-match, displaying the maturity of a team determined to capture the top prize.
Spain didn’t just impress during the knockout rounds; they showed that the trophy is not out of reach. The manner in which they beat Austria, Portugal, and Belgium sent a clear message.
The Spanish did not depend on moments of magic from any of their players. It was all about unity, clear tactics, constant pressing, and an intelligence on the field of play that most teams would struggle to match.
It could very well be the type of challenge France has yet to face in this World Cup.
France has found success through compactness, intelligent defending, and taking advantage of opportunities.Â
However, it is unlikely that Spain will allow France to play on their own terms. On the contrary, France will likely have to spend considerable time without the ball, looking for opportunities to attack.
It is in the midfield where everything can be decided.Â
If Spain dictates the pace of the game, France will have to play a game they have not played much this summer.Â
But if France disrupts Spain’s game plan and makes use of their speed and space on the counterattack, they will remind everyone why France is regarded as the most dangerous team in this tournament.
Other aspects make the match special. The semifinal brings together two European powerhouses, and their previous meetings have mostly been decided by marginal differences. Just one mistake, or one excellent pass, is likely to decide the game.
Their last meeting was in June 2025, in the UEFA Nations League semifinals, where Spain edged out a 5-4 victory, and it is most definitely the kind of game every football fan has been hoping to see again at this World Cup.
It remains uncertain whether Spain is indeed the most dangerous threat to France until after 90 minutes, and possibly even more. Nevertheless, considering current performances, there is no better candidate among the remaining teams in the competition capable of preventing France from reaching the World Cup final than Spain.
