Rabat – Spanish Minister of Sports Milagros Talón has responded to reports in which Spanish media expressed concerns over the possibility of Morocco hosting the 2030 World Cup final.
Talón said last week that the reports circulating on the matter are not official.
“I can assure you that this government and the entire working group will work to ensure that the final is held in Spain,” Mundo Deportivo quoted the minister as saying.
Talón also promised Spaniards that her cabinet would hold a meeting with FIFA in September to discuss preparations for the tournament, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
Last week, Spanish news outlet The Objective claimed Morocco “secured enough support within the FIFA Council to determine who will host the 2030 World Cup final.”
“It has 22 of the 37 votes under control. It has secured the backing of the African, Asian, North American, and Oceania confederations thanks to the influence of Donald Trump’s administration, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia,” the report alleges.
The report forms part of a broader campaign and a series of allegations seeking to politicize a process FIFA has yet to decide officially.
The claims come in the wake of debate following FIFA’s recent controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban ahead of the US-Belgium game.
Since then, reports have slammed FIFA over Trump’s alleged influence on the governing body’s decision-making.
The media have increasingly focused on the competition between Morocco and Spain to host the tournament final. Hosting the World Cup showcase would bring global prestige to the host while also generating significant tourism revenue and contributing to accelerating infrastructure development.
Hosting such a tournament’s final would also help the host attract more investment, as public works projects such as airport expansions and road transit upgrades are among the key infrastructure improvements associated with the event.
