Rabat – Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd has returned to training with Olympique de Marseille after a lengthy absence on the sidelines due to an injury that ruled him out of representing the Atlas Lions at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The French club announced on Tuesday that the Moroccan defender had rejoined first-team training, marking a significant step in his recovery as he prepares for the upcoming season.
Ahead of the World Cup, Aguerd left the Morocco national team’s camp to continue his rehabilitation from a chronic groin injury, one of the most difficult injuries for professional footballers because of its lengthy recovery process.
As his condition failed to improve and the injury worsened, Olympique de Marseille’s medical staff decided that surgery was the best option. The procedure was carried out on March 12 in an effort to permanently resolve the persistent pain that had troubled the defender in recent months.
According to L’Équipe, Aguerd’s injury was not the result of a single incident but rather a chronic groin condition called “pubalgia” that developed over months of competitive football.
Despite playing through the pain and undergoing conservative treatment, his condition gradually worsened, forcing Olympique de Marseille’s medical staff to opt for surgery in March 2026.
