Rabat – Morocco’s ambassador to Italy, Youssef Balla, said the embassy is following the tragic case of Abderrahim Fakir with the utmost attention, conveying the representation’s condolences and sincere sympathy to the victim’s family.

In Bologna’s Pilastro district, a police intervention on Sunday turned fatal after officers physically restrained the 43-year-old Moroccan man and bound his wrists with plastic zip ties.

“At such a painful time, on behalf of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco, I wish to express our deepest condolences and our sincere sympathy to the victim’s family. Instructions have been given from the outset to the competent Consulate General of the Kingdom of Morocco to ensure the family receives all the necessary moral support and consular assistance required in such grave circumstances,” the ambassador stated.

The ambassador expressed “full confidence” in Italy’s judicial system, stating that the ongoing investigations will provide “complete clarity on what happened.”

Balla emphasized that the consulate general will maintain constant contact with authorities in charge of the investigation, emphasizing that shedding full light on this dramatic affair, rigorously and transparently verifying all the circumstances surrounding it would be in everyone’s interest.

A viral video documented the moment when a violent police intervention led to the killing of the Moroccan man, stirring outrage on social media.

Moroccans worldwide are calling for justice for Fakir, who reportedly pleaded for help and asked the officers to stop.

Local authorities, includingBologna Mayor Matteo Lepore, called for demonstrations demanding “truth and justice” regarding his death.

Speaking on Omnibus on La7, Lepore said institutions must establish “exactly what happened and stand by the victim’s family” as prosecutors continue investigating the case.

The tragedy came after a resident alerted police after hearing a man behaving “erratically” near the building’s parking lot.

Medical personnel and police arrived to intervene, with officers allegedly striking Fakir with a vehicle.

Pepper spray was also used on him before he was physically restrained and killed.
