Rabat – Morocco’s Delegate Minister for the Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, is reportedly preparing to join the leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM).
Moroccan news outlet Le360 quoted a source from the party confirming that Lekjaa is set to join PAM ahead of the general elections in September.
According to the report, PAM will announce the news during its National Council meeting on Saturday, July 25.
Lekjaa is a key figure in Morocco’s current government and is known for his visionary leadership that contributed to revamping Morocco’s football sector.
The news comes a month after Lekjaa denied reports suggesting he was joining the party, which is part of the government coalition alongside Istiqlal and the National Rally of Independents (RNI).
Lekjaa rejected the reports in a statement reported by Media24 in June.
“I am not a candidate in the parliamentary elections on PAM’s lists, I am not a member of the party, and I am not affiliated with any political party,” the news outlet quoted him as saying.
He said that if he ever decides in the future to enter political life or run for office, he will announce it himself.
Morocco is holding its elections on September 23.
Several reports and social media posts suggest Lekjaa could be the next Head of Government.
In June, Bloomberg reported that Lekjaa was being courted by two political parties to become their leader ahead of the elections.
The report acknowledged Lekjaa’s efforts in transforming Morocco’s football team into a serious World Cup contender.
The report also suggested that the courtship positions Lekjaa as a potential candidate for head of government, with PAM’s member Samir Goudar confirming his party’s pursuit of Lekjaa.
For Goudar, it is an “honor” to attract a figure of his caliber.
Lekjaa has been serving as President of Morocco’s football federation since 2014 and the vice president of the Confederation of African Football since 2025.
King Mohammed VI appointed Lekjaa as Director of the Budget at the Ministry of Economy in January 2021.
He holds a State Engineering degree in agronomy and a Higher Cycle diploma from the National School of Administration.
