Converging reports have announced that Mark van Bommel is Belgium’s new head coach.
Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano said Bommel will be the coach for Belgium until 2028.
“Deal in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, ready to replace Rudi Garcia,” Romano wrote on X.
The decision comes just one week after Rudi Garcia’s departure following the painful exit of the Red Devils in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.
Garcia achieved amazing records with the Belgian National Team, with 12 impressive wins, 6 draws, and only 2 defeats from his 20 matches after becoming the coach of the Red Devils back in January 2026.
Mark van Bommel started his coaching career in June 2018, when he began coaching PSV Eindhoven for the first time after serving as an assistant coach with the Netherlands U17 national team in January 2014.
Later, he served as youth coach U19 for PSV Eindhoven in 2017, before coaching Royal Antwerp from 2022 to 2024, with whom he won the league-cup-super cup treble in 2023.
Now, van Bommel is leading a highly talented squad that needs nothing more than a sound tactical touch to secure its first major title since winning at the 1920 Olympics.
Language proficiency could pose a challenge, as Van Bommel does not speak French.
Yet, the Dutchman is reportedly keen to improve his language skills quickly, and his command of several other languages is viewed as an asset.
