Rabat – Morocco’s Consulate General in Bologna, Italy, has reiterated that the kingdom’s diplomatic and consular services in Italy are closely monitoring the case of Abderrahim Fakir, a 43-year-old Moroccan man who was killed during a brutal police intervention in Bologna on July 19.
A statement from the consulate said Khadija Ndour, the consul general of Morocco in Bologna, also visited the victim’s family on the instructions of Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita.
During the visit, Ndour extended her condolences and sympathy to the family, assuring them that Morocco’s diplomatic and consular services remain fully mobilized to follow the case.
Morocco is also deploying all necessary resources to provide administrative and consular support throughout the case.
Fakir was killed by two police officers, who knelt on him, with his face down, while he was pleading for help as paramedics stood still and ignored his cry for help.
Morocco also continues to maintain direct contact with Italian authorities, monitoring all phases of the judicial proceedings, the consul told the victim’s family.
Consular and administrative authorities continue to assist the family of the victim with all procedures related to Fakir’s body repatriation to Morocco.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the embassy and consulate’s commitment to continue to follow the case with the utmost care and responsibility to provide the victim’s family with all support and assistance amid ongoing investigations.
Fakir’s killing sparked uproar across the world, with Morocco urging a thorough investigation.
On Tuesday, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry called on Italy to quickly carry out a full investigation into the killing of Fakir, stating that it wants all the circumstances surrounding the case to be established.
Six people, including the two police officers and medical workers, are under investigation, pending an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
