Rabat – Former Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has reportedly emerged as a potential candidate to take charge of Ecuador’s national football team following the departure of Sebastián Beccacece.
According to Ecuadorian journalist Roberto Bonafont, Regragui is one of the names under consideration to lead La Tri. Bonafont cited a trusted source claiming that the Moroccan tactician is interested in taking on the role.
The statement has fueled speculation about Regragui’s next move after his spell with Morocco, although no official approach or negotiations have been confirmed by the Ecuadorian Football Federation.
Why Regragui?
Regragui built a strong international reputation after guiding Morocco to a historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the best-ever performance by an African or Arab nation at the global tournament. Under his leadership, the Atlas Lions defeated several top-ranked football teams and captured global attention with their remarkable run to the semifinals.
One factor believed to strengthen Regragui’s candidacy is his fluency in Spanish, which would allow him to communicate effectively with Ecuador’s players, coaching staff, and federation officials.
While Ecuador has yet to announce its next head coach, the fact that Regragui’s name is being linked with the job speaks volumes about his current standing in world football.
