Rabat – US President Donald Trump has expressed his gratitude to King Mohammed VI after Morocco named the strategic Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway in his honor, calling the gesture a “great honor.”
In a message shared on his social media platform, Trump wrote: “Thank you to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, for this great honor. I look forward to traveling the full length of this magnificent expressway one day, and hope it will be soon.”
The expressway, officially designated the Donald J. Trump Expressway, extends approximately 1,055 kilometers, connecting Tiznit to Dakhla and serving as a major infrastructure project linking Morocco’s northern and southern provinces.
Trump’s message comes amid increasingly strong relations between Rabat and Washington, with bilateral ties expanding across political, economic, and strategic fields in recent years.
The partnership gained significant momentum following the United States’ December 2020 decision to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Sahara. Since then, successive U.S. administrations have maintained that position, reaffirming Washington’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the basis for a lasting political solution to the regional dispute.
The United States has repeatedly reiterated its backing for Morocco’s autonomy plan, including in recent official statements describing it as the only realistic and credible framework for resolving the conflict. As the penholder of United Nations Security Council resolutions on the Sahara issue, Washington has also continued to support efforts to relaunch the UN-led political process, emphasizing that Algeria should participate in the negotiations alongside the other parties.
The US also backed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which reaffirmed support for a realistic, pragmatic, and enduring political solution, while recognizing the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a serious and credible proposal to end the dispute.
Morocco’s autonomy plan has gained growing international support, with more than 130 countries now backing the initiative, including through the opening of consulates in the southern provinces or public endorsements of the proposal.
The latest exchange between Rabat and Washington follows a series of diplomatic gestures underscoring the close relationship between the two countries. Earlier this month, on the occasion of the US Independence Day on July 4, King Mohammed VI sent a congratulatory message to President Trump, reaffirming Morocco’s commitment to further strengthening the North African country’s longstanding strategic partnership with the United States.
