Neymar Jr has announced that he has retired from international football.
The announcement comes after a disappointing end to Neymar’s FIFA World Cup campaign under Carlo Ancelotti, after Brazil’s run ended in the Round of 16 with a loss to Norway.
The 34-year-old superstar confirmed his decision in an emotional statement, saying his time with the Seleção had come to an end after years of representing his country on the biggest stages.
“My moment with the Brazilian national team, I think it’s already over. I made history there, and I’m very happy. I lived many things there. I gave my blood and my life, I always fought for the yellow shirt, but I think I don’t want it anymore.” Neymar said.
During his journey with the Seleção, Neymar scored 80 goals and made 59 assists in 130 appearances; he became the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing Pelé’s long-standing record.
Despite his remarkable individual achievements, the FIFA World Cup remained the dream that he never achieved. Neymar featured in four World Cups and carried Brazil’s hopes across multiple generations, but injuries and heartbreaking eliminations prevented him from lifting football’s most priceless trophy.
Although his Brazil career has come to an end, Neymar’s legacy is firmly secured as one of the greatest players in the history of the Seleção.
