Russia Imports Gasoline Cargo from Morocco Amid Domestic Fuel Shortages

Russia has turned to Morocco for a gasoline shipment as it seeks to ease mounting pressure on its domestic fuel market following refinery disruptions and supply shortages.

Agadir – Russia has imported a cargo of approximately 30,000 metric tons of AI-92 gasoline from Morocco, according to two industry sources cited by Reuters.

The shipment reflects Russia’s efforts to secure additional fuel supplies as the country faces reduced refinery output and growing pressure on its domestic gasoline market.

According to the sources, a Panama-flagged tanker loaded the gasoline at the port of Tangier in mid-July and is currently unloading the cargo at Russia’s Arctic port of Murmansk. The sources said Russian energy company Lukoil supplied the shipment

Data from the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange (SPIMEX) indicate that AI-92 gasoline is now being offered for rail delivery from Kola station, which serves the Murmansk port.

Russia has introduced several measures in recent months to stabilize fuel supplies after repeated drone attacks on oil refineries disrupted production, contributing to shortages and higher prices.

The government has already increased gasoline imports by rail from Belarus and Kazakhstan while also imposing restrictions on fuel exports to prioritize domestic demand.

In mid-July, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced that the country would begin importing oil products to help offset refinery outages and address rising fuel demand.

Meanwhile, Morocco has also experienced uncertainty over fuel prices in recent weeks. At the start of August, several reports projected a significant increase in gasoline and diesel prices due to the impact of tensions in the Middle East on global oil markets.

The reports suggested prices could rise by as much as MAD 2 per liter, potentially pushing fuel prices close to MAD 15 per liter.

Reuters did not specify whether the gasoline shipped from Tangier was produced in Morocco or re-exported through the country’s port infrastructure, reporting only that the cargo was loaded at the Moroccan port before being transported to Russia.
