Meknes – Villarreal CF have entered the race to sign Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat from Fenerbahçe this summer, but they face serious competition from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, who have already taken steps to secure his transfer, Fichajes reports.
With Amrabat under contract at Fenerbahçe through June 2028, Villarreal will need to negotiate a fee with the Turkish side, where the midfielder has returned following a loan spell at Real Betis last season.
Villarreal’s pursuit of Amrabat comes as no surprise. The Spanish side has had the Moroccan international on their radar since early 2026 during initial summer transfer discussions.
Although a move failed to materialize at the time, Amrabat’s return to Istanbul following his stint at Betis has reactivated the market. Reports indicate Fenerbahçe are now open to listening to offers for the midfielder.
According to Fichajes, Villarreal are seeking an experienced central midfielder who can provide defensive stability, win back possession, and initiate plays from deep. Having already adjusted to Spanish football with Real Betis, Amrabat fits the profile perfectly.
Despite injuries limiting his consistency, Amrabat logged 29 appearances last season in Spain. That successful transition gives Villarreal confidence, removing the usual gamble of bringing in a player without prior La Liga experience.
Villarreal’s main competition comes from Al-Ittihad, who have already submitted proposals to Fenerbahçe. The Saudi club is eager to reinforce its midfield following the recent departure of Fabinho at the end of his contract.
Reports conflict regarding the size of Al-Ittihad’s offer. The club’s Initial proposal is estimated at €12 million, while other sources suggest it could rise to €20 million.
Villareal must now step up with a convincing offer to rival Al-Ittihad. Without a finalized deal, Amrabat remains a Fenerbahçe player, but his desire to continue competing at the top level in Europe could define the outcome.
