Rabat – Morocco has shifted its attention toward South America as it searches for an international friendly opponent during the September-October FIFA window, following Mexico’s reported withdrawal from a proposed match.
According to Moroccan outlet Assabah, the Mexican Football Federation informed the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) that El Tri would be unavailable due to a previously arranged training camp and a series of friendlies in the United States.
Mexico is scheduled to face Colombia on September 26, Peru on September 29, and Chile on October 6, leaving no room in its calendar for a meeting with the Atlas Lions.
The reported cancellation has prompted the FRMF to explore alternatives, with Colombia emerging as a potential opponent if logistical arrangements can be finalized.
The reported search comes as Morocco prepares for the opening rounds of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Atlas Lions are set to host Gabon and Lesotho in Rabat on September 25 and September 28, respectively.
Assabah reports that Morocco’s coaching staff, led by head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, is particularly interested in facing a South American side.
The preference reportedly stems from a desire to test the team against opponents known for their physical intensity while avoiding additional fixtures against African nations ahead of competitive qualifying matches.
The report also notes that European opposition is difficult to secure during the upcoming international break, as UEFA national teams will be occupied with UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Neither the FRMF nor the Colombian Football Federation has officially commented on the reported discussions.
