Canada Tightens Study Permit Financial Checks for Moroccan Students in 2026

Rabat – Moroccan students applying for or renewing a study permit in Canada are facing stricter financial checks under updated instructions from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

Since July 24, 2026, applicants are required to provide bank statements covering six months, compared with four months previously. IRCC may also examine the source of the money and request additional documents before deciding whether to approve or renew a study permit.

Officers can now also examine the account history, transactions and the financial situation of the person paying for the student’s studies to determine whether the funds are genuinely available and sufficient.

A large deposit made shortly before an application may therefore require an explanation and documents showing where the money came from.

When parents are financing their child’s studies, officers may request information about their income, employment and financial situation to assess whether they can realistically cover the declared expenses.

However, the financial requirement itself remains unchanged. For a single applicant planning to study outside Quebec, the amount required for living expenses is 22,895 Canadian dollars for one year. The figure has been in effect since September 1, 2025.

The required living funds increase when family members accompany the applicant. The amount is CA$28,502 (MAD 197,000) for two people, CA$35,040 (MAD 242,000) for three, CA$42,543 (MAD 294,000) for four, CA$48,252 (MAD 334,000) for five, CA$54,420 (MAD 376,000) for six and CA$60,589 (MAD 419,000) for seven. An additional CA$6,170 (MAD 42,600) is required for each person beyond seven.

For programs lasting several years, students do not have to hold the full cost of the entire program when they apply.

They must demonstrate that they can finance the first year and provide a credible plan for funding subsequent years, including through regular parental income, scholarships or other documented sources.

Quebec has separate financial requirements for international students.
