Rabat – Barcelona is facing a captaincy crisis after losing two key dressing-room figures. Marc-Andre ter Stegen has departed on loan to Ajax, while Ronald Araujo is closing in on a shock move to Liverpool, leaving the armband without a clear owner as the new season approaches.
Ter Stegen’s exit initially pushed Araujo into the role of principal captain. His expected move to the Premier League now forces Hansi Flick to overhaul the leadership core of his squad entirely. Through the end of last season, the established hierarchy consisted of Ter Stegen, Araujo, Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha, and Pedri.
Frenkie de Jong appears to be the natural candidate to become Barcelona’s next principal captain. His current injury complicates the picture, however, with the club reportedly growing frustrated with the Dutch international over his decision to prioritize the World Cup ahead of club commitments.
Raphinha is gaining ground in this context. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Brazilian has become one of the most influential figures in the squad, both on the field and off it, making him a serious candidate to wear the armband regularly.
Eric Garcia and Gavi emerge as candidates
With De Jong, Raphinha, and Pedri expected to fill three of the five leadership spots, the club still needs two more names to complete its captaincy group. Eric Garcia, a La Masia product who spent time at Manchester City, is considered one of the strongest candidates given his experience and deep ties to the academy.
Gavi, aged 22, also remains in contention despite his relative youth. The midfielder represents many of the qualities traditionally associated with the club’s identity, including intensity and passion.
Club management is under pressure to finalize these roles before the competitive season kicks off. Flick will lean on these designated leaders to bridge the gap between the coaching staff and a squad filled with young talent.
