Meknes – The Dutch football federation has officially announced former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez as the new head coach of the Netherlands on Wednesday.
The Dutch football federation officially announced the appointment across their social media channels, with the official OnsOranje accounts posting, “We proudly present our new head coach. Welcome, Xavi Hernández!”
Xavi has agreed to a four-year contract with the Dutch football federation, committing to the national team long-term. Under the agreement, the Catalan manager will lead the Oranje through their campaigns for both Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup.
The 46-year-old who steps into international management after replacing Ronald Koeman, was chosen for the role ahead of other reported candidates, including former Portugal boss Roberto Martínez and Netherlands U21 manager Michael Reiziger.
The former Barcelona legend has been out of management since ending his tenure as the club’s head coach in the summer of 2024.
However, in recent statements, he expressed a strong interest in international management. A national team role offers a less demanding schedule, allowing him to spend more time with his family while continuing to live in Barcelona.
Eager to secure Ronald Koeman’s successor quickly, the Dutch football federation has cleared the way for Xavi to begin monitoring players for his debut squad, with the Eredivisie season already under way.
The move marks a familiar transition for the Catalan manager, who previously replaced Koeman at Barcelona in November 2021 and now succeeds him once again for the Dutch national team.
Koeman’s departure came after the Netherlands suffered a painful Round of 32 exit against Morocco at the 2026 World Cup, stepping down shortly after their penalty shootout defeat and opening the door for Xavi’s new era.
