Rabat – Sergio Busquets is returning to FC Barcelona to begin his coaching career. Barca Atletic announced on Monday that the Spanish midfielder joined its technical staff.
The veteran will work directly under manager Juliano Belletti. The reserve squad currently competes in the Segunda Federacion, which is the fourth tier of Spanish football.
This announcement comes just months after Busquets officially retired from professional football. He concluded his playing career with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer in December 2025.
During his recent stint in the United States, Busquets reunited with his former teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. Together, they helped Inter Miami capture the Leagues Cup title before Busquets decided to retire.
According to an official press release by FC Barcelona, the former player brings massive experience to the reserve squad. He aims to guide emerging talents while actively pursuing his UEFA coaching licenses.
“His experience, his knowledge, and his way of understanding the game become part of Juliano Belletti’s work team,” the Catalan club stated.
The 38-year-old previously enjoyed a historic 15-season run with the first team at FC Barcelona. He played 722 matches and won 32 major titles during his celebrated tenure.
His expansive trophy cabinet includes nine La Liga championships and three UEFA Champions League titles. He also claimed seven Copa del Rey victories during his time in Spain.
Busquets anchored the Spanish national team for over a decade. He played a crucial role for his country in securing the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He also helped Spain win the 2012 UEFA European Championship.
His return to Catalonia reunites him with an institution where he is considered a legendary midfielder. Analysts expect his deep understanding of positional play to benefit the next generation.
Barca Atletic serves as the primary stepping stone for graduates of the famous La Masia academy. The technical staff is now tasked with earning a promotion to the third division.
Sergio Busquets will begin his new duties immediately at the Ciutat Esportiva training facility. The strategic move signals his ambition to manage a top-flight European team in the future.
