Premier League Admits Delay in Manchester City Financial Case

Manchester City Financial Case Delayed as Verdict Remains Pending

Rabat – The long-running Premier League investigation into Manchester City remains without a final verdict, with chief executive Richard Masters acknowledging that the process has taken longer than originally expected.

City were charged in February 2023 with 130 alleged breaches relating to financial reporting and the disclosure of information about payments to managers and players between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

The hearings were completed in late 2024, but a decision has yet to be announced. The delay has kept the case under close scrutiny, given the potential consequences for the club if the charges are upheld.

Possible sanctions could range from financial penalties and a points deduction to relegation or the removal of previous titles. However, no punishment has been determined while the legal process remains ongoing.

Masters said the Premier League was aware of the public interest surrounding the case but could not discuss its progress.

“I accept that it is taking longer than expected,” Masters said. “I understand that people want to know what is happening as soon as possible, but I simply cannot say anything.”

He stressed that the league must follow its established procedures before a conclusion can be reached.

“Our rules are very clear. The process has to be followed and there is only one route, which is to allow the proceedings to reach their natural conclusion,” he added.

The charges concern alleged breaches over several seasons, while City have consistently denied the accusations and maintained that they have acted properly.

The club has also faced separate allegations concerning UEFA financial fair play rules covering the period from 2009 to 2018.
