NGO Tell Mama Warns of Surge in Anti-Muslim Hate in London

Rabat – Data from Tell Mama, an organization monitoring and measuring anti-Muslim hate crimes, online abuse, and Islamophobia, reported a surge in anti-Muslim hate in London, warning that the number increased more than sixfold since 2021.

The first half of 2026 alone witnessed at least 1,031 cases reported, showing a sustained rise in hatred toward Muslims.

The year 2025 was the highest annual total on record, with 1,909 reported cases.

The figures reported by the NGO show 313 reported cases in 2021; 818 reports in 2022; 1,028 reports in 2023; 1,819 reports in 2024; 1,909 reports in 2025; while 1,031 were reported in the first six months of this year alone.

“The number of anti-Muslim reports in London has grown more than sixfold since 2021. Having risen sharply year-on-year through 2022 to 2024, reports have remained at a historically elevated level through 2025, and the first half of 2026 alone has already surpassed the total recorded across the whole of 2023,” the report warned.

The NGO said Westminster emerges as a major hotspot for similar crises, stating the figures reported reflect a series of “serious incidents” endured by Muslim communities in the UK’s capital in recent months.

The NGO further emphasized and acknowledged a growing trend of street-based aggression, xenophobic rhetoric, and the targeting of Islamic institutions and centers, citing troubling incidents including a foiled terror plot by a teenager targeting south London mosques.

This also includes intimidation of Muslim mosque-goers and aggressive public harassment.

One recent case documents the suffering of Muslims, as viral videos show a Muslim woman wearing a hijab was attacked near a bus stop in Edmonton, north London, on August 15.

Footage shows a man punching the woman before another woman intervened. Police later arrived and detained the attacker.

In June, police in the UK arrested 12 people who sought to target an Islamic gathering in a new disturbing Islamophobic plot.

The detainees are aged between 27 and 82, including one woman.

A recent study by British Future also examined public attitudes toward Muslims in the UK, showing that more than 56% of Muslims experienced “prejudice based on their religion” over the past year.
