Rabat – Kylian Mbappé scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid secured a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad on Wednesday in their first home match of the LaLiga season.
Mbappé opened the scoring in the 40th minute, but Real Sociedad quickly responded through Luka Sučić, who restored parity four minutes later. The French forward put Madrid back in front shortly after the hour mark, before Vinícius Jr. extended the hosts’ advantage in the 68th minute. Mbappé then completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes remaining.
Mourinho also marked his return to the Santiago Bernabéu with a win, more than 13 years after his last home game in charge of Real Madrid.
The Bernabéu crowd jeered Real Madrid before halftime following a sluggish start in which the hosts lacked rhythm, were careless in possession, and looked vulnerable to counter-attacks.
“There’s always a sense of justice in the boos and the applause, and the odd boo now and then doesn’t do anyone any harm – it helps you grow,” Mourinho told a press conference, according to Reuters.
“We all know the Santiago Bernabeu and just how demanding the fans are there, and I’m very pleased with how my players responded under pressure and put in a great second half, in which we could even have scored more goals.”
Real Sociedad started strongly and came close to scoring in the 10th minute, but Thibaut Courtois denied Mikel Oyarzabal from close range. Sergio Gómez also missed narrowly before Mbappé opened the scoring for Madrid.
Real Madrid returned from halftime with greater intensity, with Mbappé and Vinícius Jr. causing problems for the visitors. Jude Bellingham also played a key role in Madrid’s improved second-half display.
