Meknes – Celta Vigo have announced that Moroccan international Jones El Abdellaoui will undergo left knee surgery on Wednesday during the FIFA international window.
Medical evaluations revealed a small loose body inside his knee joint, requiring a minor surgical procedure to remove it.
The Spanish side said the procedure is necessary, shedding light on the forward’s recent absence from team sheets.
The joint issue forced El Abdellaoui out of Celta Vigo’s recent league encounters against Malaga and Racing Santander, as well as their UEFA Europa League opener against AC Omonia.
The Moroccan international joined Celta Vigo in January 2025 after completing a reported €4.2 million move from Norwegian side Valerenga. The young winger signed a four-year contract with the Spanish side running through June 2029.
The 20-year-old had received a call-up from Morocco U23 head coach Jamal Benaider for the upcoming training camp.
However, the knee injury will prevent the winger from joining the squad at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maâmora for the camp, which runs from September 20 toOctober 6.
During this international gathering, the Morocco U23 squad will play two friendly matches. The Atlas Cubs will face Mali on October 1 at Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, before heading to Tangier to play against Tanzania on October 5.
The injury deals a significant blow to Morocco U23’s tactical arrangements for the upcoming fixtures.
The technical bench must now look for alternative solutions while awaiting the player’s full recovery and return to the pitch following his rehabilitation.
