Police in Bouznika, near Rabat, arrested a 66-year-old Libyan national who was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by the Libyan judicial authorities.
Police arrested the 66-year-old suspect on Saturday in an operation involving Bouznika police and members of the Royal Gendarmerie in Mansouria.
Upon checking his database records, police identified the suspect as being the subject of an Interpol Red Notice.
The suspect faces charges related to international drug trafficking, with preliminary investigations showing that he escaped from a prison facility.
Investigations showed that Libyan authorities arrested the suspect in 2002 on suspicion of links to a criminal network involved in international drug trafficking.
A court subsequently sentenced him to life imprisonment before he managed to escape from prison in 2011.
Police in Morocco placed the suspect in custody, and the National Central Bureau, Interpol Rabat, is tasked with notifying Libyan authorities pending the extradition proceedings.
The arrest is part of Morocco’s commitment to fighting cross-border crimes and intensifying international security cooperation.
Interpol frequently emphasizes the importance of Morocco’s security approach in handling crimes and contributing to regional stability and peace.
In 2025, Morocco hosted the 93rd General Assembly of Interpol, where Morocco’s chief of the General Directorate of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), Abdellatif Hammouchi, reiterated Rabat’s firm commitment to contributing to strengthening global security cooperation.
“Morocco’s commitment to hosting the 93rd session of Interpol stems from its firm dedication to strengthening multilateral security cooperation and its active engagement in consolidating the international coalition against the threats posed by transnational organized crime,” Hammouchi said.
