Morocco, Mistral AI Release First Open-Source Darija AI Tools

Morocco and Mistral AI agreement to release first open-source Darija AI Tools.

Agadir – Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform has launched its first artificial intelligence tools developed in partnership with French AI company Mistral AI as open source, marking a new step in the country’s efforts to develop locally adapted AI technologies.

The initiative is part of the implementation of the Maroc Digital 2030 strategy and the AI Made in Morocco roadmap, which aim to build sovereign, responsible AI solutions that reflect Morocco’s linguistic and cultural specificities.

The first two tools developed under the partnership include a language identification classifier capable of recognizing different Arabic dialects, including Moroccan Darija, and an automatic speech recognition model based on Mistral AI’s Voxtral technology.

The Voxtral model can transcribe spoken Darija into written text, including conversations that switch between Arabic, French, and English. The tools are designed to help administrations, startups, researchers, developers, and businesses build AI applications that better reflect how Moroccans communicate.

According to the ministry, these technologies could support a range of sectors, including public services, education, media, customer support, document digitization, and multilingual data processing.

The release of the tools in open source will allow developers and institutions to use them to create solutions tailored to local needs, while supporting broader access to AI technologies in Morocco.

The partnership also reflects the objectives of the AI Made in Morocco roadmap, led by Minister of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, which seeks to develop AI systems that address the country’s specific needs and strengthen its technological independence, the ministry explained.

By improving AI’s ability to understand Darija and other national languages, the initiative aims to promote digital inclusion, improve the quality of public services, and strengthen Morocco’s capacity to develop and control its own technological solutions.

The ministry concluded that the new tools complement AI solutions that it develops and trains internally to support its AI marketplace and meet the needs of public administrations and services.
