Casablanca – Morocco is facing heavy thunderstorms, hail and strong wind gusts across several provinces on Tuesday, with the unsettled weather expected to continue into Wednesday, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
The DGM issued an orange-level weather alert covering a number of provinces, with rainfall totals expected to reach up to 60 millimeters in some areas.
The heaviest rainfall is forecast for Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab and Aousserd, where between 40 and 60 mm of rain is expected from Tuesday at 11 a.m. through Wednesday at 6 a.m.
The same weather conditions are expected in Laayoune, Es-Semara and Tarfaya between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday, with rainfall totals ranging from 30 to 40 mm.
Thunderstorms are also expected between 1 p.m. and 11 p.m. Tuesday in several provinces across northern, central and eastern Morocco. These include Guercif, Taza, Al Hoceima, Midelt, Boulemane, Sefrou, Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Berkane, Driouch, Nador, Oujda-Angad, Taourirt, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Ifrane and Khénifra.
Rainfall totals in these areas are expected to range between 20 and 30 mm.
The DGM also warned that the thunderstorms could be accompanied by hail and strong wind gusts, potentially causing difficult local weather conditions during the alert period.
The orange-level warning comes as several parts of the country experience unstable weather, with the affected areas extending from the southern provinces to the Atlas region and parts of the north and east.
Residents in the affected provinces are urged to remain cautious during periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly when traveling.
