Rabat – Cristiano Ronaldo has been placed under a formal provisional suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after disciplinary proceedings were opened over his departure from the national team camp in Copenhagen.
The FPF’s Disciplinary Council approved the proceedings on October 9 to determine whether the events reported on October 7 carry disciplinary consequences. The case was sent to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee on Friday and has been classified as urgent.
The federation said Ronaldo had already been subject to an automatic preventive suspension before the formal case was opened. That has now been replaced by a non-automatic provisional suspension while the investigation continues.
The suspension concerns Ronaldo’s participation with the Portuguese national team rather than his club career. Portuguese legal analysis cited by A Bola said the measure prevents him from representing Portugal while the disciplinary process is active.
Ronaldo could face one-to-six-month ban
The case relates to Article 160 of the FPF Disciplinary Regulations.
Under that rule, a player who is properly called up and leaves or fails to attend national-team training, matches or other official activities without justification can face a suspension of between one and six months. Professional players may also receive a fine ranging from approximately €510 to €1,020.
No final punishment has yet been issued.
The disciplinary process will remain confidential until the investigation stage is completed, meaning the FPF has not disclosed further details of the case.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp on September 30 following his dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The 41-year-old later released a detailed statement explaining his version of events and accusing Jesus of breaking agreements twice about his role during the international window.
Ronaldo also apologized to supporters and his teammates and acknowledged that his decision to leave the camp should carry consequences.
“I understand that the punishment should have no mitigating circumstances,” Ronaldo said, adding that his status as Portugal captain made the situation more serious.
He nevertheless made clear that he remains available to represent Portugal once he has served any disciplinary sanction.
The time already spent under automatic provisional suspension can count toward any eventual punishment, meaning the final decision could determine whether Ronaldo is available when Portugal return to action in November.
