Casablanca – Morocco’s House of Representatives will hold a plenary session tomorrow to elect the members of its bureau and the heads of its permanent parliamentary committees, according to a statement from the president’s office.
The session will take place in accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution and the House’s rules of procedure, which govern the election of the president , bureau members and committee leadership at the beginning of a parliamentary term.
The elections follow the appointment of Ahmed Touizi as president of the House of Representatives today. Touizi won 220 votes out of 369 cast, defeating Idriss Azami El Idrissi of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), who received 59 votes. A total of 90 ballots were declared invalid.
The election was supervised by the House’s provisional bureau president, Abdelaziz Aba, in accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution and the institution’s internal regulations.
Following his election, Touizi said he would maintain equal distance from both the majority and opposition blocs, stressing that he intended to ensure all members of parliament could carry out their duties.
He also pledged to provide deputies with the necessary resources to perform their legislative roles, in line with the royal directives outlined in King Mohammed VI’s speech marking the opening of the current parliamentary term.
Touizi said he felt the weight of the responsibility entrusted to him and expressed hope that he would help present a positive image of the legislative institution. He said he would work toward that goal with the support of the House bureau, parliamentary group leaders and committee chairs.
The president also reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the Constitution and the House’s rules of procedure.
Under Article 62, the House elects its president, bureau members and permanent committee leadership at the start of the parliamentary term. The process is repeated during the April session in the third year of the term for the remainder of the legislature.
