RABAT — Rabat Court of First Instance prosecutors will pursue four individuals in detention over their alleged participation in an unauthorized gathering in Rabat on October 12, authorities announced Thursday.
A group of around 40 people, including 14 women, organized the gathering on October 12, the prosecutor said in a statement.
The gathering reportedly caused disorder on the public highway and disrupted services provided to users, prompting public security forces to intervene to disperse the crowd in accordance with the law governing public gatherings.
According to the statement, the participants had been asked to end the gathering but refused to comply, the statement said.
Participants violently resisted attempts by security forces to disperse them, leaving three officers injured, it added, noting that the officers were taken to hospital to receive medical treatment.
The prosecutor ordered a judicial investigation, which led to the arrest of seven people who had taken part in the gathering. They were placed in police custody as part of the investigation, according to the statement.
After the suspects appeared before the prosecution and authorities reviewed the investigation’s findings, the prosecutor decided to prosecute four of them while in detention.
They face charges of refusing to comply with orders, participating in an unauthorized gathering, insulting public officials in the performance of their duties, and assaulting them, the statement said.
The four defendants have been referred to the court for trial.
The prosecutor added that the arrested individuals benefited from all legal guarantees, including the right to a defense.
