Spain’s Diesel Exports to Morocco Double to 161,000 Tons in August

Spain exported 161,000 tons of diesel to Morocco in August, doubling shipments compared with July.

Spanish news outlet La Razón reported that Morocco’s diesel imports rose from 83,000 to 161,000 tons in one month. Shipments surged 94%, increasing by 78,000 tons in August compared with July.

“This allowed the Maghreb market to absorb approximately a quarter of Spain’s gasoline (sic) exports and consolidated its position among the main destinations for Spanish petroleum products,” the report adds, noting that the uptick also coincided with a 50.6% increase in total Spanish oil shipments to Morocco.

The shipments rose from 180,000 tons in July to 271,000 tons in August, an increase of 91,000 tons, the report adds, describing Morocco as the leading destination for Spanish oil exports.

Morocco overtook France and Portugal to become the leading destination for Spain’s petroleum-product exports in August, accounting for approximately 16% of the country’s total exports of 1.698 million tons. Of the 271,000 tons shipped to Morocco, diesel represented 59.4%, equivalent to approximately 161,000 tons.

The report comes as fuel prices continue to put pressure on Moroccan household incomes.

Distributors continue to raise diesel prices, with the price of one liter reaching around MAD 15 or more.

Gasoline prices stand at MAD 15.33 per liter, with repeated price adjustments fueling public frustration over the cost of living.

The Moroccan government has continued exceptional financial support for freight and passenger transport professionals to maintain transport fares and limit the impact of rising international hydrocarbon prices on citizens.

However, citizens continue to complain about rising prices, not only for fuel but also for other commodities.

Earlier this month, the High Commission for Planning (HCP) acknowledged the challenges faced by Moroccans as the household confidence index fell to 59.2 points in the third quarter of 2026, down from 60.1 points in the previous quarter.

This reflects the persistent pressure on households from rising living costs.

The survey shows that 76.3% of households believe their living standards deteriorated over the past 12 months, while 18.5% said they remained unchanged and 5.2% reported an improvement.
