Rabat – The Portuguese Football Association has issued a month-long suspension to team captain Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday.
The disciplinary action follows the star forward’s sudden departure from the squad’s training base after a bitter dispute with manager Jorge Jesus over tactical expectations.
In a unanimous ruling, the federation’s disciplinary panel fully substantiated the allegations against the veteran 41-year-old striker.
Alongside the 30-day competitive ban, governing officials ordered Ronaldo to pay an administrative fine of $285.83.
Ronaldo’s departure came after he publicly charged Jesus with breaking promises about his tactical status on two separate occasions, following a match against Norway where he was left as an unused sub.
Jesus refuted claims that any special assurances had been made regarding Ronaldo’s playing status.
However, the manager signaled a willingness to work things out, keeping the door open for the forward’s potential return to the national setup.
According to the federation’s disciplinary council, Ronaldo intentionally broke official conduct rules under Article 160(1).
Formal charges against him were opened on October 9, shortly after the incident was officially reported on October 7.
The federation’s statement did not explain which games or team events Ronaldo will actually miss, or if the time he has already spent under a temporary suspension counts toward his 30-day punishment.
The captain later apologized to supporters for not acknowledging them after the Norway game and expressed remorse for abandoning his teammates.
He added that once he serves his required punishment, he remains fully committed to playing for Portugal again.
Speaking to local outlet Record, Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proenca stressed that leadership retains a “strong desire” to welcome Ronaldo back into the national team.
