Rabat – Police arrested a 31-year-old man in Tetouan, northern Morocco, on Wednesday after a video circulating online showed him causing damage inside a Carrefour supermarket.
The incident took place on October 21 at a Carrefour market, according to several reports. Footage circulating online showed the man smashing bottles in the store’s alcoholic beverages section.
Local reports said the man threatened people with sharp objects outside the supermarket, saying he wanted to “change what is wrong,” before damaging bottles in the store’s alcohol section. He was wearing clothing resembling a military uniform.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said security services from the Tetouan police prefecture arrested the suspect shortly after the incident. Police said the man showed signs of a mental disorder and acted in a hysterical state while causing material damage inside the supermarket.
Police placed the suspect in custody as part of a judicial investigation conducted by the Tetouan judicial police under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
The investigation aims to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine its causes, while also assessing the suspect’s mental and psychological condition, according to the police statement.
The arrest follows the circulation of footage of the incident on social media, which drew attention to the damage inside the store.
