Rabat – Bayern Munich secured a place in the round of 16 of the German Cup on Wednesday after defeating Magdeburg 6-1, with Moroccan international Ismael Saibari finding the net at the Allianz Arena.
French winger Michael Olise opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Magdeburg equalized through Mateusz Zukowski.
Saibari restored Bayern’s lead in the 21st minute after receiving a pass from Olise. The Moroccan forward then lifted the ball over the goalkeeper to put the hosts ahead 2-1.
Bayern maintained their advantage after the break, with Olise scoring his second goal from the penalty spot. Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown added further goals in the 70th and 73rd minutes, respectively, before David Santos Daiber completed the scoring in stoppage time.
The convincing victory secured Bayern’s progression to the next round of the competition as they continued their German Cup campaign.
Bayern celebrates Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or
The match also came shortly after English striker Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Bayern Munich player to claim the award since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.
Kane remained on the bench for Wednesday’s match, less than 48 hours after receiving the prestigious individual honor. His teammates formed a guard of honor for him before kickoff, while supporters at the Allianz Arena also applauded the striker.
Bayern had illuminated the stadium’s facade in gold overnight from Monday to Tuesday to celebrate Kane’s achievement.
The German champions were without several key players, including Joshua Kimmich, Luis Díaz, and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Head coach Vincent Kompany also missed the match due to illness, leaving assistant coach Aaron Danks in charge of the team.
