Casablanca — Afriquia has dispelled rumors that it was getting ready to purchase the Samir refinery.

Afriquia Gaz, the Moroccan leader in the hydrocarbon sector, has confirmed that it had no intention to purchase the Samir refinery, which announced it was liquidating in June.

A communiqué released by the Akwa group, Afriquia’s mother company, reveals that the Afriquia had never discussed the idea of purchasing Samir with the company. The statement also declares that Afriquia has no intentions of buying the company.

The rumor had reportedly been circulated by a union member of the Samir refinery, who told his personnel that Afriquia had displayed interest in purchasing the company. While ‘SAMIR’ did receive offers, none came from Morocco.

On June 1, the Court of Commerce of Casablanca announced that the Samir reminder would be liquidating after shareholders filed a claim with the court regarding malfunctions with the company’s management.

If a buyer comes forward, it may save the company, but this has taken more time than expected, and the failure of ‘Samir’ could be a big blow to the Moroccan economy.
