Casablanca – Statistics recently released by the Moroccan National Tourist Office indicate that the kingdom’s tourism base in Spain is gradually expanding.
Morocco received more than 680,000 visitors from Spain in 2013. The number is expected to increase in 2014.
While French tourists still top the list of foreign visitors to Morocco, their Spanish counterparts are becoming increasingly fond of traveling to the North African kingdom, according to 2013 statistics released by the Moroccan National Tourist Office.
Around 682,834 visited Morocco in 2013, a significant increase in Spanish tourism to Morocco over the last ten years. In 2000, the number of Spanish tourists who visited Morocco was 232,245. The number increased to 367,811 in 2005 and has continued to increase progressively since then.
Based on the positive development recorded over the past 10 years, the Moroccan National Tourist Office forecasts a significant increase in the number of Spanish tourists visiting Morocco in 2014. The office expects 745,000 Spanish tourists to visit in 2014, according to Spanish website Europa Press, which reported the positive statistics shared by the Moroccan National Tourist Office.
As to the regional origins of the Spanish tourists, the statistics indicate that 25% of Spanish tourists who visited Morocco in 2013 are Catalonians, 19% are from the capital Madrid, 12% from Andalusia, and 7% from the Basque Country. Most of the Spanish tourists stayed in the Tangier-Tetouan region during their visit.
