Rabat – In a recent address at the UN General Assembly’s 4th Committee, Morocco’s ambassador to the UN Omar Hilale once again criticized Alger’s fixation on the Western Sahara dispute.
Describing Algeria’s approach as a “schizophrenic obsession,” Hilale accused the regime of being trapped in a state of perpetual conflict.
Hilale’s remarks came as a response to Amar Benajama’s hostile remarks and maneuvers targeting Morocco’s territorial integrity during a session as part of fourth committee meetings.
“On one hand, it [Algeria] claims to be neutral, stating that it is not involved, but on the other, it lectures and addresses our committee without ever approaching the Security Council,” Hilale said.
Algeria’s regime finances, arms, and hosts the Polisario Front, supporting their independence claims to undermine Morocco’s territorial; integrity.
Despite its unwavering support, Algeria’s regime refuses to shoulder its responsibility in the dispute, claiming that a solution to the Sahara conflict should be negotiated only between Polisario and Morocco.
Such claims defy UN Security Council resolutions that continuously and repeatedly call on all parties to the dispute to engage in good faith to contribute to the UN-led political process in searching for an agreed-upon and mutually acceptable political solution to the dispute.
Responding to Algeria’s regime claims, Hilale pointed to Algeria’s “bizarre” behavior of avoiding discussions in the Security Council.
“The Security Council is the body that holds international law and negotiates the political solution. But Algeria prefers to ignore this buddy, just as it ignores the interventions our Commission has heard in the last ten days,” he said.
Hilale further dismantled Algeria’s claims regarding its so-called support of “Sahrawi people.”
“What people? There are no Sahrawi people. There are Sahrawi populations, some of whom are trapped in the Tindouf camps, controlled by the Polisario militias and the Algerian army,” he said.
Hilale reiterated Morocco’s position that only through UN-sponsored roundtable discussions and the accountability of the four involved parties can “this region find peace and stability.”
This week marked the Fourth Committee adopting a resolution reiterating its support for the UN-led political process seeking to resolve the regional dispute.
The resolution reiterated the call on all parties to fully cooperate with the UN Secretary General to reach a political solution based on the resolutions adopted since 2007.
Adopted on Thursday the resolution also supports efforts made to f and invites all parties to fully cooperate with the UN to reach a “mutually acceptable political solution.”
