Morocco: Milk producer associations justify sudden rise in milk prices

Tangier

“Centrale Laitière Maroc Lait” announced on Thursday that milk prices will increase starting from mid-August. According to the company, the prices of some of its dairy products will rise, as a result.

After the added 4-centimes, the new price for half a liter of milk is MAD 3.5 up from MAD 3.6. The price of ‘Salim’ milk has also increased by 0.5 MAD: from 8.5 to 9 MAD.

According to some sources, the reasons behind the increase are attributed to “the company’s policy to produce high-quality dairy products, the current economic crisis, and the soaring prices of raw materials.”

France’s Gervais Danone company finalized last February its takeover of “Centrale Laitière Maroc” from Morocco’s investment company (Société nationale d’investissement known as SNI) for MAD 6.1 billion.

It is worth pointing that this sudden increase came about without prior notice, nor was announced on media. Customers were surprised on Thursday when shopkeepers told them that the price of milk has increased.
