Fez, June 6, 2013

After gaining maturity and worldwide fame over the past editions, the Festival of World Sacred Music of Fez returns for its 19th edition from 7 to 9 June. Over the past editions, the Festival has been an event for cultural cross-pollination and cultural dialogue through music and artistic expression. Every June, the sky of the ancient city of Fez glows with festive lights and mixed sounds of world music instruments. This gives the city its universal dimension and makes of it a cultural hub par excellence.

The choice this year of Andalusian culture and music for the festivities reflects the wisdom and cultural awareness which has always characterized the festival. From Baba Al-Makina to the winding and labyrinthine streets of the old Medina, through the Batha Museum and many other places, songs, poetry and musical sounds will again take over the ancient city. The event will bring together more than thirty artists from Arab-Andalusian, Sufi, Amazigh and Spanish Flamenco.

The program of the festival includes several musical performances, which will hypnotize the audience and take it on a journey aboard memory to the sublime past of Andalusia. And to create artistic communion between Fez and Andalusia, the opening night will offer a poetic spectacle, dance and music entitled “Love is my religion,” directed by Andres Marin, one of the most significant current flamenco artists.

The great Paco de Lucia, one of the legends of flamenco and one of the best guitarists in the world, will also be there to convey the soul of Andalusia, in a concert on June 9 at Bab Al Makina. It should be noted that the 2013 edition of World Sacred Music Festival of Fez coincides with the celebration of one millennium for the creation of the Kingdom of Granada by the Zirids.
