Marrakech – Having lived in Marrakech since I was born, getting used to its weather, to its red walls, and to the unique sense of humor and funny accent of its people, I unfortunately failed several times to understand why people, both Moroccans and non-Moroccans, admire the city so much that it has been selected as world’s ninth best Christmas shopping destination, the number one best tourist destination in Africa, and amongst the top ten best street foods in the world, by different institutions and websites where thousands of travelers around the world voted in favor of the red city.
However, as hotel rooms kept being rented, houses being bought, and roads being jammed, I started to look around and realized all the beauty that I as a Marrakchi was taking for granted and that others as tourists succeeded in recognizing.
For starters, Marrakech weather is always both healthy and appealing, no matter how hot or cold it gets. Many are those who enjoy the sunlight, and that’s what Marrakech offers, all year round. Its weather is most famous in winter, where you can benefit from a summer-like sun during the day, go swimming or even get a tan, while enjoying the sight of the Atlas Mountains that are covered in snow. And if just watching from afar doesn’t do it for you, you may drive there in less than two hours and you’ll find yourself surround by white scenery and a warm climate. And if the tranquility of nature and the sound of birds attract you, then rivers, lakes and waterfalls are waiting for you only a few hours away from Marrakech.
On the other hand, if you like different kinds of sounds and loud noises then rent your room in the Medina or simply head there using one of Marrakech’s famous carts. There, the sounds made by different traditional musical instrument and by vendors’ voices calling out for you and inviting you to try their merchandise are like no other. In addition to that, being surrounded by the red color used to paint Marrakech’s every wall makes you feel like you are a part of the most colorful and vivid painting. The hospitality of Marrakchi people and their sense of humor is another aspect of the city that can’t be found elsewhere.
The countless delights that Marrakech offers depend on how much one can afford. Thus, if you are willing to spend your money in the right place, then in Marrakech, you get what you pay for. No wonder stars and famous people all around the world have chosen Marrakech as their go-to destination where they choose to spend their vacations away from the press and live as One Thousand and One Night’s princes and princesses.
Thanks to its proximity to Europe, European politicians and celebrities, especially French ones, have become addicted to Marrakech’s unique flavor. Nicholas Sarkozy, Alain Delon, and Yves Saint Laurent long before them, all decided to buy their own mansions or villas in the red city since renting hotel suites was no longer satisfying. But Europeans are not the only ones fond of Marrakech, celebrities from all over the globe such as Shakira, Messi, Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani Emir of Qatar and his wife Cheikha Moza, to state but a few, cannot seem to get enough of its magic especially when it comes to celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
For this year’s New Year’s Eve, Marrakech is expected to host a countless number of stars who consider the ochre city to be heaven on earth, satisfying their every taste: those who like peace and quiet, and those who prefer entertainment and clubbing; those who like the unique and traditional Moroccan architecture, and those who favor the sophisticated five star resorts, they all opt for Marrakech and never get enough of it as they keep coming back every year, many times a year.
