Rabat – Local police arrested today in M’diq, a city in northern Morocco, a suspect over his alleged involvement in a case related to the possession and trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances.

Police said the arrest was made in cooperation with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

Police searches of two cars and two residences used by the suspect, 38, enabled security services to seize 4.4 kilograms of cocaine, 21.5 kilograms of cannabis, a money-counting machine, as well as a sum of money suspected to be from drug trafficking.

Police put the suspect into custody for further investigation to shed more light on the case.

The operation is part of Morocco’s security approach, with the country’s enforcement agencies having in recent years developed a tradition of coordinating efforts to address drug trafficking and other national and transnational security threats.

In 2023, Morocco processed 99,513 drug trafficking-related cases, proceeding to arrest 130,212 individuals involved in drug trafficking crimes.

Police also seized 81 tons and 175 kilograms of cannabis last year, a 17% decrease compared to the previous year.

According to the General Directorate of National Security’s annual report, police also seized nearly two tonnes of cocaine, six kilograms and 800 grams of heroin, as well as psychotropic substances amounting to 1.2 million tablets, including brands of ecstasy.
