The judicial police department in Al Hoceima, northern Morocco, launched today an investigation to arrest all suspects involved in an attempt to traffick five tons and 345 kilograms of cannabis.
Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said in a statement today that the cannabis was seized in a joint cooperation between police, local authorities, the royal gendarmerie, and the country’s royal navy.
“The attempts to smuggle these drug shipments were thwarted in two separate operations,” DGSN said, noting that the first operation was carried out by the judicial police in Al Hoceima in coordination with local authorities.
Police seized during the operation 41 bugs of drugs that were hidden in a rocky area on the beach, the statement noted, adding that the navy seized the other shipments in two fishing boats.
Investigations are ongoing to uncover all possible extensions and arrest all suspects involved in the drug trafficking attempts.
This operation is part of Morocco’s proactive security approach, with the country’s numerous law enforcement agencies having in recent years developed a tradition of systematically coordinating efforts to address drug trafficking and other national and transnational security threats.
In 2023, Moroccan police recorded and processed 99,513 cases related to drug trafficking, proceeding to arrest a whopping 130,212 individuals involved in drug trafficking crimes.
Police also seized 81 tons and 175 kilograms of cannabis last year, a 17% decrease compared to the previous year.
As part of its anti-drug trafficking approach, Morocco also seized last year nearly two tonnes of cocaine, six kilograms and 880 grams of heroin, and intercepted shipments of psychotropic substances amounting to 1.2 million tablets, including brands of ecstasy.
