Rabat – The adoption by the European Parliament on Thursday of the Morocco-EU Agreement on trade liberalization in agricultural products, processed agricultural products, fish and fisheries products, is “a wise and responsible decision,” said Moroccan Foreign Ministry.

The decision “reflects the excellent relations that bind the EU and Morocco, confirming the upward momentum launched by both parties for several years and demonstrates the commitment of all institutions of the European Union to the optimum rapprochement process between Morocco and the EU in the spirit of the Advanced Status adopted by both parties in 2008,” said the ministry in a statement.

In this regard, the Department welcomes the active role played by the European officials in the Commission, the Council and the Parliament in favor of completing the process of ratification of this Agreement, “in view of persistent and deliberate maneuvers of some parties to hinder the continued evolution of the Strategic Partnership linking Morocco and the EU and to curb the positive dynamics of cooperation launched between the EU and its southern Mediterranean neighbors.”

The adoption by the Parliament of the Morocco-EU agriculture accord “reinforces the efforts of the Moroccan diplomacy, under the leadership of HM the King, to defend the interests of the Kingdom,” the ministry said.

The statement said that since the signing of the agreement on December 13, 2010, the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Fisheries worked together particularly through close cooperation between Morocco’s mission to the EU and the Moroccan parliament as well as the private sector to “support the process of ratification of the European Parliament and counteract the actions of the opponents of Morocco to make this process fail.”

The adoption of this agreement, it added, is an important step in strengthening and revitalizing the exemplary partnership and mutually beneficial relationship that binds the two parties.

In this context, the statement said, Morocco, which attaches great importance to the sustainability of this relationship, calls for the continuation of the same constructive European momentum in order to achieve the objectives set by mutual agreement for the construction of a partnership based on shared values and mutual interests and the finalization of ongoing negotiations and the eventual establishment of a new contractual framework.
