Rabat – Marrakech police arrested on Friday a French national wanted internationally for attempted murder.
Carried out in coordination with Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), the arrest was based on an international warrant issued by French judicial authorities.
The 25-year suspect was in Morocco illegally and was found carrying a suspected fake passport.
A background check through Interpol’s database revealed that the individual was subject to a Red Notice issued by the Central National Bureau in Paris. The notice relates to a prison sentence for an attempted murder case.
The suspect is currently in custody under judicial supervision and Moroccan authorities are conducting further investigations under the public prosecutor’s direction.
Meanwhile, procedures are in place to notify French authorities of the arrest through international security cooperation channels.
The arrest came a day after Moroccan police arrested a 19-year-old Swedish citizen, who was also the subject of an international arrest warrant.
The arrest took place at the checkpoint of the Spanish enclave Ceuta after the Interpol database showed that the National Central Bureau in Stockholm had issued a red notice against the suspect.
He is facing charges of involvement in the possession of firearms for criminal purposes. The suspect is currently in police custody pending extradition procedures.
Interpol has repeatedly praised Morocco’s contributions in facilitating the arrest of suspects involved in various crimes.
