It has already been two years since Morocco shocked the world with its remarkable success in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Moroccans across the globe proudly waved their flag alongside World Cup champions, celebrating the team’s achievement and the image it set for the country.

Every four years, the FIFA World Cup gathers nations through athletic excellence and cultural exchange. Morocco’s 2022 performance exemplified the tournament’s role in boosting international exposure, enhancing tourism, and improving global perception, particularly in the US.

Morocco’s ties with the US began in 1777, as the North African country was notably the first to recognize America’s independence. Today, 300,000 Moroccan-Americans across several states preserve and share their culture.

The 2022 Qatar World Cup further showcased the Moroccan diaspora in the US through increased media exposure and shared experiences.

How did the 2022 World Cup run affect US perceptions of Morocco?

To assess the influence of the World Cup, I conducted a survey to explore how Morocco’s performance shaped American perceptions by analyzing its media portrayal.

The survey involved a group of 22 participants, all Americans with connections to Morocco, the majority of whom are Moroccan immigrants in the USA spanning different generations.

Participants ranged in age from 18 to 60, with women slightly outnumbering men—a factor unlikely to have significantly influenced the survey results.

Over 70% of the participants felt represented by the Moroccan team, whose diversity showcases Morocco’s rich cultural background.

The players’ values of family, respect, and religion further shaped perceptions of Moroccan identity on a global stage.

Additionally, 90% of the participants noted a positive shift in how their community viewed them and Morocco, confirming how the country’s performance impacted its image in the US.

Previously seen as an “underdog”, as stated by participants, Morocco’s success transformed its representation, inspiring underrepresented nations. Despite not securing a podium finish, the team is celebrated as champions by Moroccans, Arabs, Muslims, and Africans overall.

The tournament also increased Morocco’s media visibility through documentaries like Netflix’s “Captains of the World,” and positioned the nation as a host for CAN 2025 and a co-host for the 2030 World Cup. These developments reinforced Morocco’s international role and its identity as a symbol of unity, culture, and athletic achievement.

Finally, the 2022 FIFA World Cup has permitted Morocco to shine at the international scale, setting a base for a deeper and more important role in global tournaments as well as a better representation of Moroccan identity and values.
