Rabat – Belouizdad are back in CAF Champions League action today as they host Orlando Pirates from South Africa. The Algerian champions haven’t started their domestic season well, but with just eight games played, there is still enough time to turn their fortunes around.
All eyes are on this group stage opener.
Belouizdad’s coach Abdelkader Amrani knows it won’t be easy. “Orlando Pirates is a very respectable and strong team, playing modern football, and currently leading their championship,” he said. “The match will be very difficult, but after our last victory [against MC Alger], I hope confidence is high.”
On the other hand, the visitors are flying high. They top the Betway Premiership, and the last game they lost was back in May against TS Galaxy. They’ve scored 10 goals in their last five games – averaging 1.85 goals per game – and conceded just two. Their defence looks rock solid.
However, this is Pirates’ first CAF Champions League campaign since 2019. But still they bring pedigree as they won the title back in 1996. Belouizdad, on the other hand, are still chasing their first continental title.
Belouizdad’s attack hasn’t clicked this season. Seven goals in eight league games – just 0.87 goals per game – is a telltale of their misfiring attacking setup. Goals have even dried up in two of their last four matches. So, against Pirates’ impermeable defence, the hosts will need to be sharper in front of goal.
For Pirates, an opening win could set the tone in this tricky group. Belouizdad will want to make their home advantage count before heading into tougher fixtures. Both sides need points, and this clash promises drama.
So, can Belouizdad make the most of their home advantage before heading to a tougher fixture against Egypt’s Al Ahly? Or would the pirates raid them and loot the three points?
